Copy right

What is Copyright?

Copyright protects original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works. It allows an original work to be considered a property that is owned by somebody. The framework for Copyright Law is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 ('the Act').

When does Copyright begin?

In music, copyright begins automatically once a piece of music is created, and documented or recorded (eg. on video, tape or CD or simply writing down the notation of a score).

How long does Copyright last?

In the UK, copyright generally lasts for a period of 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author dies.

Luckily the song we are using does no require copyright because the bands song we're using is not copyrighted and they are happy for us to use their material. This makes the process of creating a video easier because if you do copyright infringe in the music industry you personally can get fined a large sum.

For Example

A & M Records vs. Napster

The quintessential case against peer-to-peer filing sharing, it sparked debate over when sharing stops and stealing starts, and if sites that provide the platform can be held liable under copyright laws.

Napster launched in 1999, and provided a hub where users could download songs night and day from all over the world. Napster was sued by a number of major record labels in a joint copyright infringement lawsuit.

Teddy Picker , Artic Monkeys

The song refers to the popularity of celebrities. A 'teddy picker' is Northern slang for a crane machine, a popular machine at carnivals where prizes, particularly stuffed animals, are picked by a mechanical crane. The song equates a person getting noticed as a celebrity with a prize being picked up by a crane-a result of luck. The music is very upbeat with the mise en scene conveying humour throughout about the hate for fame hungry people aka teddy pickers.

The first 20 seconds the viewer hears diegetic sound of the band , music engineer speaking and the group plugin in their equipment e.g feedback from a guitar. On the left is a medium longshot of the band being relaxed having a laugh.Lighting used in ambient lighting , high angle showing like a window for viewer to create the effect that their standing there.

On the left is a close up of an alligator head which matches the lead singers alligator skinned speaker. The close up shows him on top of the speaker ,this can be related to the song as in alligator speaker projects the viscous truth about the fame hungry society of today .The bottom left picture is a high angle medium shot of equipment being seen under a pan movement yet again giving the viewer a window of the set.

After 37 seconds of establishing the location and tone (laid back and humour) , the camera cuts to a close up of a sound engineer setting the sound levels and after hearing "we're ready look " from one of the band members the engineer presses the record button , which then starts the song .

The first shot establishing the song is a mid shot of the drummer starting the beat of the song, the viewers eye sight is in line with him showing direct focus.

After we see the quick cuts of the drummer starting the song the camera pans right towards Alex Zane which shows him then performing the music with cuts changing angles and close ups on detail like his instrument or expression.

Below on the left is a cut of one of the close ups showing the lead singer playing the riffs which adds to the performance and makes the song flow.

The slide above we see a low angle mid shot of the lead singer portraying humor with a dance move to making a fool of himself, the could relate to the message of fame hungry people doing what they are told for fame and wealth. The slide below is a close up , which shows the expression to enhance the message from the performance " desperation to be seen " meaning the wannabe celebs will do anything.

To create the effect of amplitude to the base guitar the camera shows two quick cuts of the recording studios mixing desk equipment , this goes well with the music because the top left slide goes with beat and the top right slide shows the sound levels getting risen , which

Pitch 2

The Second pitch we presented to our teacher was to film our video in a car park, we realised after speaking to Mrs Mc Cluckie that this was not a smart idea. First being we would need permission to film in the premises, then if we need artificial light we would have no plugs to use , unless we had a generator which we don't .So we thought of places to film where it was one location and had all the requirements we needed.

Requirements:

- Relates the the band.
- Has a source of power.
- Easy to light
-Good for filming purposes (where people don't interfere)

Ideas

VIDEOS WE LIKE

The videos below are bands we like and videos showing what we want to achieve with out music video.

To see this video click here

This video is Artic Monkeys "i bet you look good on the dance floor " .The thing what i like about this video is the mood the band portray , which is very laid back , they perform the song well . Another thing i like is the use of camera shots , we see lots of close ups on the band and instruments to emphasise the sounds being created.I think the use of the lighting is effective using spotlights on the band and different colour lighting for the background to highlight each other.

This video is Bloc party,I enjoyed watching this video because i felt the video flowed making it enjoyable to watch. This was achieved with quick cuts to match the music. The filming the video in black and white is effective because they have added in effects (see below) .

This effect is effective because it centers the band members and by using colour highlights them .

Locations

The second location idea a underground car park.We liked this idea because it was very remote an thought it be good setting to film in .

The car park would be a good setting because you can use the spotlights and it would be remote at certain times

making it easy to film .

Locations

At this current point our group are deciding locations to film at. This is important because a location will set the mood, genre and image to the band.

The first location idea was to use an actual recording studio to film in. I searched on the internet for affordable premises to rent out and came across resident studios .I chose this location because the band could perform the track as if they're recording it.The premises would have state or the art equipment to use and provide the bands image. The recording studio is where all the bands hard work and time going into , so i thought use this location to reflect this and let them perform their song.

Music Genre

The genre we class the Song as is Indie Rock , we categorized the music to this style because we researched into different bands and spotted that "License to dance by John Youseman" sounds similar to Kaiser chiefs which are an indie rock band. Both bands use similar instruments to create their music and therefore, they have a similar outcome to the sound of their music.

Planning

Research

To help Sarah and I pick a song, we used our Ipods and music libraries on our computers to find music we was interested in.We also used other peoples itunes to find the right song. This was a good idea because we would listen to a wider range of music.Another way for us to find music was going on Youtube to listen to songs we might not have found. After listening to all the songs Sarah and I would select our favorite songs ,which we believed had most meaning to the lyrics .You can see the songs choices what we came up with in the "song choices" post.

Song Choices

The first step to making the music video was picking a song, we had loads of song choices but when it came to thinking of ideas or narratives the songs were not good choices.Another reason why some of these songs weren't chosen was because they were to well known for example The prodigy - Invaders Must Die .The song is great but in order to make the video ,it would have to be up to the standards of prodigy videos which are extreme .The good thing about our song choices is that we have a mixture of genres of music meaning all different style videos could have been made so we wasn't set on one choice at the beginning

You Me At Six - Underdog
The Bloody Beetroots ft. Steve Aoki - WARP
Jon Youseman - Licence to Dance
The Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Good Charlotte ft. M. Shadows and Synyster Gates - The River
Billy Talent- Surrender
Shinedown - 45
Rhianna - Disturbia
The Prodigy - The Omen
Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
Faithless - Mass Destruction

The song Sarah and I chose was "Licence To Dance" by a friend John Youseman .The reason we picked this song was because we liked the style of the song and we wouldn't need copy right for the song because he is a friend. We could also use the band members for the video , which would be a good thing because they know how to perform their own songs as a group.

This is our song choice above

Jamie T music video analysis

The music video i have chosen to analyse is "Sticks and Stones" by Jamie T.To see the video click on the link "sticks and stone " i am going to write about things like mise en scene , location, lyrics, camera shots or angle and sound .

The video above is a video showing you all the lyrics from this song.

I like how it tells a short story of his life as he goes to visit one of his old friends. Basically, is Jamie (Or a character) recounting his past and how times were better/worse/same. Later he realises that he misses the old times a lot more than he thought he would.

The first few seconds of the video we see the mise en scene of Jamie T wearing casual clothes dressing like a hooligan , next to him is a clown with a smoke bomb setting off ,this could link to the fact in the video is about Jamie T youth days where they act like clowns. The colour tone of the video is grey , this creates the effect of memories (reflection on the past ).The shot is a mid shot which shows half their bodies and shows us the posture of Jamie T ( very shrugged ) which conveys an attitude.

Straight after this clip you see houses in black and white tone being filmed in black and white tone .This is black and white again because it creates the effect of a memory .It has been filmed using a track shot to make the viewer see that the memory if Jamie Ts on a train which is moving .This is also a point of view shot showing Jamie Ts perspective .

At 28 seconds the viewer can see Jamie T running at a train station which shows the background of the song, where him and his friends use to hang about "Wimbledon" and where he comes from. While he is running the lyrics describe what him and his friends were like "I take a train again away from shame and blame a city pained to see"this shows that he is ashamed of how him and his friends acted while hanging around in London. "I was a ten a day, how'd you say, little shit, white lightning, heightening all my courage, quick wit. He describes his personality "little shit" shows stereotype of underage drinking "white lightening" which is a cheap drink. He also describes how alcohol effected him "heightening all my courage" , i believe this is a reflection of modern society becuse alcohol makes you believe your invincible .This shot is also filmed used a tracking shot to show Jamie T has missed the train .

The lyrics at this point is Jamie T talking about the style of clothes him and his friends wore, "wallabies" being a type of shoe and "buttoned shirts" , while Jamie says buttoned shirts he does the action in the photo on the right. The camera shot is a mid shot so the viewer can see jamies Ts actions . This shot is a medium close up showing the viewer expressions from the artist.

The photo at the top left in 0:46 second, you can see the clown drinking a pint of beer and Jamie T smoking either a roll up or a joint. The grey tone is only on Jamie T , the clown is still in colour i think this suggests that the clown( Jamie Ts friend) is still the same as he was in his youth. The photo on the top right links to the lyrics you see a close up of the clown, we see him acting silly (drunk from beer) .The lyrics say "as soon as i see the dust settle,he's out on the town to find trouble" meaning once he is drunk he just looks for trouble.

This is a close up on a Mc donalds cup, reflecting period of the aritist (teenage days) .The second picture shows that same cup getting thrown at Jamie T .The shot is a long shot to show Jamie T dodging the drink and setting location which refers to the lyrics "going to be stuck in Hampton wick ".The lyrics also show the drink is thrown at him by his mates "with the boys across the platform shouting light weight prick ! "

This close up reveals the attitude of Jamie T and his friends by showing the viewer first the tattoo (lighting bolt) which could resemble a hyper personality and second the hand gesture (swearing) showing an adolescent behavior.

The three clips above are cut aways from different points of the video. The first picture is a mid shot showing Jamie T from the knee upwards, the focus is deep focus taking the can out fo focus.

This shot in a wide mid shot, the viewer sees beer all over the glass representing vandalism .The body language shows us close bonds between the guys with them putting arms around each other.

Brief

I have decided to choose to do a music video for my coursework. The coursework will consist of the following .

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

  • a website homepage for the band;
  • a cover for its release as part of the digipak (CD/DVD package)
  • a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).
I chose to do a music video for my A2 because i believe i will be able to have the best result in doing one.I believe this because out of the three options you get to choose from i will enjoy making a music video the most. The music video will be good to test my media skills in Editing, filming, directing, producing and being creative in making narratives (if chosen to do).By the end of this course i should have developed these skills to my best capability.
